The San Jose Earthquakes announced that defender Marcos Lopez underwent an appendectomy on Tuesday afternoon to treat acute appendicitis. The surgery was performed at the Orlando Health Doctor P. Phillips Hospital in Orlando, Florida, and recovery is expected to last between two and four weeks.


Lopez, 20, made 15 starts and 18 total appearances during his debut season with the Quakes in 2019, tallying one assist. The Peruvian international did not feature in either of the Quakes' first two games of 2020, with Nick Lima starting at the left back position.
