A Cascadia Cup rivalry is renewed Saturday night when the Portland Timbers host the Vancouver Whitecaps at Providence Park.
The Timbers (9-9-4) will try to move back above the playoff line in the Western Conference following consecutive defeats to Minnesota United at Allianz Field — 1-0 in MLS play last Sunday on a late Ethan Finlay penalty kick and 2-1 in the US Open Cup semifinals Wednesday night. Brian Fernandez leveled in first-half stoppage time, canceling out a Darwin Quintero 22nd-minute penalty kick. But Mason Toye scored the decisive goal in the 64th minute for the Loons.
The Whitecaps (5-11-9) will head to Portland with confidence following a 2-1 win over host FC Cincinnati that snapped a nine-match winless streak. Vancouver fell behind after six minutes on an Allan Cruz goal, but Inbeom Hwang leveled with a screamer and Felipe scored the winner in the 84th minute.
This is their second meeting this season, with the Whitecaps winning 1-0 at BC Place May 10 on a 9th-minute Fredy Montero goal.
