The New England Revolution have confirmed that Designated Player Jermaine Jones will be undergoing a surgery to repair a sports hernia on Tuesday, with a timeline for recovery to be determined following the procedure.
On Monday morning, Jones posted a video on Instragram announcing that he was going in for a surgery the next day without stating the nature of the injury.
The midfielder said in the video, “I’ll be out for a couple of weeks,” which would rule him out of next week's Desert Diamond Cup if accurate. The Revolution's 2015 season opener comes in Seattle on March 8.
It has yet to be determined when the injury specifically occurred. Sports hernia issues are known to sometimes go unnoticed and in other cases they can be disguised as groin strains, an injury which Jones picked up last February prior to debuting with Turkish club Bestikas. He officially signed with the New England Revolution on August 24.
Jones suited up for the US national team on Sunday in a 2-0 friendly victory against Panama, logging 90 minutes at center back. The always-aggressive Jones didn’t display any evident signs of injury in the match at StubHub Center, as he manned the backline for the third straight time under Jurgen Klinsmann. Jones also managed a shot on goal and drew four fouls for the US.
Jones' procedure will be performed in Southern California, allowing Jones, who is under contract with New England through the end of this season, to recover at home with his family.
