FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution attack was in ferocious form on Saturday night, dominating visiting Real Salt Lake from the jump to cruise to a 4-0 victory at Gillette Stadium.
The Revolution looked to be in sync from the start, working creatively in and around the box while controlling a majority of the play throughout the entire match.
It seemed only a matter of time before they would break through and Chris Tierney did just that in the 39th minute, pulling the ball back on two RSL defenders before curling a right-footed shot from the top left side of the box, finding the far post for the 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later Teal Bunbury sent Charlie Davies through, into the box and although his initial effort was saved by the right hand of Jeff Attinella, the ensuing rebound was left for Juan Agudelo to knock into a wide-open net.
With a 2-0 lead in their back pocket, the Revs wasted no time to pad it in the second half with Davies skying above a crowded box to emphatically head home a cross in from Scott Caldwell, giving New England a three-goal advantage in the 50th minute.
More opportunities would follow, including a golden chance from Lee Nguyen's point-blank blast that hit the crossbar and bounced out. Other chances were snuffed out by Attinella, who made a total of nine saves in the match.
The RSL goalkeeper came up big again in the 84th minute, flat out robbing Steve Neumann with a save on the line, but Caldwell blasted home the rebound from the top of the box, netting his first career MLS goal.
The win, New England’s fourth clean sheet of the year, extended their unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2) while Real Salt Lake saw their unblemished record on the road go by the wayside (2-2-3 overall, 1-1-2 on the road) as they were kept without a goal for the third straight match.
Real Salt Lake return to Rio Tinto for a nationally televised match with the San Jose Earthquakes next Friday (10 pm ET, Univision Deportes Network). The Revolution remain in Foxborough in advance of Saturday's match against Eastern Conference rivals New York Red Bulls (7:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE).
