MLS Golden Boot: Sebastian Giovinco closes in on leader Kei Kamara during final stretch

MLS Golden Boot: Giovinco closes in on Kamara

Knock-Knock
Who's there?
Sebastian.
Sebastian who?
Seba-GOOOOOOOOAAAALL!!

With strike No. 21, this time a blessedly uncontroversial deflected free kick, Sebastian Giovinco is knocking on Kei Kamara's door. The Crew SC forward has two games to reinforce the locks, but Seba is fully capable of huffing, puffing and blowing down that season-long lead.

With a breather before a double-game week against the stout Red Bulls and a leaky Crew SC, the Atomic Ant and Toronto FC have an opening for a double-awesome result, in which Giovinco's potential scoring successes could drive the team ever-higher in the Eastern Conference table.

Robbie Keane (17 goals) rejoined David Villa in third, with Chris Wondolowski (16) staving off hard chargers in Bradley Wright-Phillips and Cyle Larin (15 each), both of whom also scored in Week 31.

Tough to score against Luis Robles, tougher still when the gameplan is (successfully) designed to keep you off the sheet.

WATCH: Goal vs. PHI

The best single-season statistical offensive output in MLS history continues to grow ... and grow ... and GROW ... and one day, Giovinco's spectacular season will end. But the record books will still love him.

Maybe there are no DV PK specials to report on (he's tied with Wondo for the league lead with six), but let's take a moment to acknowledge the awesome, if ultimately futile, run NYCFC made during this final stretch of the season. There's a foundation being laid for future success if lessons learned from this season are applied heading into 2016.

WATCH: Goal vs. DAL
Sure, the strikers on this list are dangerous when the whole squad is on offense, but what separates them is the ability to manifest and convert their own chances. Keane pressed to create an opportunity for his 17th goal, and then slotted it past the 'keeper, earning LA a crucial, playoff-clinching point.
And let's not forget he's tallied his total in just 20 starts (22 games).

WATCH: Goal vs. VAN
After a clean week against RSL, Wondo re-entered the ranks of the scoring, with a right-place, right-time rebound special. Could any other Quake have chipped that sitter? Maybe. But there's a reason Wondolowski was there to finish the play: you don't score double-digit goals in six straight seasons – or climb to fifth all-time – without a nose for the empty net.
