LA Groove? The MLS team names that almost were | SIDELINE

There's more of a soccer feel to MLS team names in recent years: Sporting Kansas City, FC Dallas, New York City FC.

It wasn't always like that.

In a recent New York Times article about branding and team names, an interesting little tidbit was uncovered: two names that didn’t make the cut.

Los Angeles team owners apparently rejected Groove before settling on Galaxy, while the Chicago Fire, joining as an expansion club in 1998, were nearly called the Rhythm.

“Like any great franchise, or product, once you get going, you get real, live experience,” MLS chief marketing officer Howard Handler said in the article. “The world evolves; you make adjustments; you go with what works.”

Would Galaxy and Fire fans have taken to either one of those names? Let us know in the comment section.
