Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez scores first goal for LA Galaxy after missing penalty kick

Chicharito scores first goal but says loss is "on me" after penalty miss

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez - LA Galaxy - Close up

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez’s goalless start to his LA Galaxy career has ended.

The Mexican legend found the back of the net in the 88th minute, but it wasn't enough for the Galaxy to get their first win of the season as the fell 2-1 to the Portland Timbers in their MLS is Back Tournament opener. You can watch the goal below.

The striker had the chance to give the Galaxy the lead multiple times earlier in the match and his best chance came in the 12th minute. Presented with a penalty kick, the Mexican superstar was denied by Steve Clark. Hernandez struck his penalty kick low and right, but Portland’s goalkeeper read him the entire way. The penalty was awarded after Cristian Pavon's shot was blocked by Dario Zuparic's arm.

"It's not the greatest taste to score your first goal in a loss like this one and then when you miss a penalty obviously so. I told the lads that this one was on me," Hernandez said after the match. "I always believe that in this sport, even when sometimes the goalscorer can score the last minute goal, he's not a hero."

Before the COVID-19 stoppage in play, Hernandez failed to score LA’s first two games of the 2020 season. The missed PK was actually his first shot on target in a Galaxy uniform.
