Two clubs in the thick of the hunt for playoff positions in the Eastern Conference meet when Columbus Crew SC take on New York City FC for the first time, Wednesday evening at Mapfre Stadium. After a week off following a 2-1 win at the Colorado Rapids, Crew SC sit in a tie for third place in the conference, six points ahead of the final postseason placing. New York City FC are just a point out of sixth place in their inaugural season, coming off a 3-1 win against current Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield leaders D.C. United at Yankee Stadium last Thursday.

  • Crew SC return to action after a week off, after Kei Kamara scored his fourth and fifth goals over the last five games to lead his side to a 2-1 victory at the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 8, snapping a two-game winless run. Kamara still leads the MLS Golden Boot standings with 17 goals on the season, one ahead of Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco.
  • David Villa scored his 14th goal of the season and added his sixth assist of the season as New York City FC snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 win against Supporters’ Shield leaders D.C. United last Thursday at Yankee Stadium. Villa has scored 12 goals over the last 12 games, dating back to May 30.
  • The teams are meeting for the first time ever – the first of two meetings in a 10-day span. They will play a return match Aug. 29 at Yankee Stadium.
